Congrats on a great finish to a great fall!! The first Guard in the history of our program to win two BOA Regional Championships in one season!!!
Thanks to our Captains for their great leadership, thanks to our Guard Parents for their great support, and thanks to each & every Guard Girl for every ounce of effort they put forth to make the fall show fabulous!!
Our last football game will be Friday...game instructions will be announced in class this week...please make sure you listen up!!
This will be the our final Guard blog post until after our new Guard is selected at tryouts in January. Winter Guard will get their info/updates via email or text from Donna or Rebecca. Symphonic Winds/Concert Band will now get all their info/updates from Henson/Adams.
End of Season Reminders for Tigerettes & Parents!!!
We no longer have marching rehearsals Tuesday nights/Thursday afternoons.
Tigerette Budget Info...hardcopy spreadsheet for Fall 2012 guard spending will go home with Guard Girls on Nov 1st. Parents please email if you have
questions.
Band Fees...all taken care of...thanks!!
Home Concessions...Guard Parents worked/prepaid out OR will owe the payout fee for no-show before tryouts.
Disney World...please make sure you get payments to Mr. Henson the first of each month. Next trip payment is due on or before November 10th.
Holiday Concert, District Contest, Spring Concert, Winter Guard, etc. Employers can’t require students miss a required school event or a rehearsal. If written verification for employer is needed see a director immediately. It is student's responsibility to inform employer about school required events in a timely manner...failure to do so will not excuse absence from band activities.
Off Season Grades...all must maintain an overall 70% average each grading period. Parents will be notified in writing if there is a problem with grades. Members on “Grade Probation” will be dismissed from the squad if they do not improve and maintain an overall 70%.
Off Season Conduct...all are still expected to maintain Satisfactory conduct. Stay out of the office!! Follow dress code, no tardies, do not skip class, do not cheat, do not lie, be respectful, keep lips (and everything else) to yourself, be a kind, sweet, cooperative young lady at school, in your social life, and at home!!! Keep social media clean!!!
Off Season Hair...all agreed to maintain a shoulder length hairstyle. While we feel sure some may need a good trim as the season ends, do not think for a second that chin or shoulder length hair or drastic color change is okay...it is defiance. COLOR = NATURAL!!! Please have hairdressers do highlighting or lowlight coloring by working off your natural hair color...the real color of your hair is the one growing at the roots. (note as well that continual hair issues are documented)
Off Season Weight...extra pounds weaken ability to move & perform with ease. PLEASE eat healthy & work to get in shape...tryouts start 11 weeks from today!!
Off Season Skills...take an honest look at skills in all areas and work to improve in the off season. Flags, weapons, and body!! Guard Girls are not guaranteed a spot on next year’s squad.
Tigerette Tryouts = January 7-11, 2013...tryouts will take place in one week this year!! We will do the clinic Monday - Thursday and tryout on Friday. A new physical form will be due at that time. Seniors will be needed daily afterschool to assist with tryout activities.
Report Card...Guard Girls received a grade first nine week that solely reflected their fall job as a Tigerette. Factored into that grade were unexcused absences...which by JeffCoEd definition are all parent excuse absences and/or any unexcused absences. The only “excused” absence from class are ones labeled “P”. These are given for example when the student produces a doctor’s excuse or when the student is given a “Principal excused absence” for a college day or something similar. JefCoEd only permits 5 unexcused absences per semester.
Transition to Winter Activities...
As we reach the end of football season this week our transition to the winter setting now takes place. Tigerettes not involved in Winter Guard will bring in instruments this week to rejoin the horn line to begin work for the upcoming Christmas Concert, and also begin preliminary preparation for scored performances at the Alabama District Festivals held in February or March.
The next phase of band works like this...
Concert Band (grades 7-8) will have class 7th Period with Mr. Adams for the rest of this semester. The class will change to 6th Period next semester.
Symphonic Winds (grades 9-12) will work with Mr. Henson during 7th period for the rest of the year. Band Blog updated today with their schedule.
Winter Guard members (grades 7-12) will continue their work with McKinney/Hope during 7th period the entire school year.
Note: Spring Trip rehearsals will take place during school and/or afterschool as needed.
Instrumental Ability:
Knowing that Guard members have missed out on months of “instrumental instruction” Mr. Henson and Mr. Adams will focus on making the upcoming transition as easy as possible for the Tigerettes. There are however some very clear expectations:
A Guard member is expected to play to the best of her ability, to exhibit good effort in the daily class, to have good attendance, and to attend class with the same type attitude that they exhibit on the fall field. They are expected to be attentive & to show work to improve their playing skills, but be assured they would never be “called out”, punished or their grade penalized because their role in band has been a visual one to this point.
All Guard Girls involved must keep a positive attitude about the winter season & playing their horns. If they are unable to fulfill that part of required duty as a Tigerette they should consider leaving the band program at the end of the semester. Home practice, scheduled afterschool rehearsals, and of course performance events are required. Attendance will be taken daily during band class. In addition to in-class requirements, unexcused absences/check-outs will affect band grades. Band is a scheduled class and a graded subject.
Guard Girls should not show up late with a pass from other teachers, and should not ask to leave the band class to do work for other classes or to practice for other extracurricular activities. Band is not an off period or study hall.
Guard girls involved in other school sponsored extracurricular activities will be excused from band class ONLY to participate in competitive events that do not conflict with competitive band activity and only those games/matches that are confirmed by coaches.
For clarity here are observations made by Mr. Henson and Mr. Adams regarding Guard Girls during Symphonic Winds & Concert Band last year...
On every grade level they had Guard Girls who worked very hard in the winter setting. They had girls who were seated in high chair placements when skills tests were given, they also had girls who while not skilled enough to be seated high when the rankings were done clearly gave 100 percent in class everyday. This was evidenced thru attendance, attention, and attitude in band. Sadly they also report having Guard Girls on every grade level who did not do their best. Tardies, talking, failing to follow instruction of directors and/or section leaders, legs crossed, no shoes, note writing, texting, laughing, playing off sounds on purpose, sleeping, and lastly girls who did all in their power to miss band class as often as they could.
We can all agree that even the the most generous band directors (and full time horn players) can only view the poorer behaviors mentioned above as what they are...lack of respect/effort coming from Guard girls they normally see go above and beyond the call of duty. Band grading will be done fairly the remainder of the year, but do not expect Directors to overlook blatant disrespect in word or deed.
Attendance does count!! Please also remember that Band Directors have much input as to those chosen for leadership roles in coming years...a girl who is “stellar” on the field but a “ stinker” in the band hall should not expect selection for leadership roles. Rebecca and I encourage each of our girls to make sure that their actions, attitude, and attendance remain up to par.
Parents we will appreciate your help with this before any girl’s grade or current/future leadership role is harmed by lackluster performance during concert season.
As always...Seniors are expected to continue to lead the way with a good attitude, good effort, good behavior, and good attendance. Juniors and Sophomores are expected to show leadership intent with a good attitude, good effort, good behavior, and good attendance. 7th, 8th, & 9th Graders are expected to show respect with a good attitude, good effort, good behavior, and good attendance.
Schedule Changes or Not Trying Out Again??
Every fall we have a girl or two that no longer wish to participate as a guard member. Some decide to continue with band as a full time horn player, and others decide to leave the guard/band program entirely. Neither choice is a big deal...we completely understand, we know that for a multitude of reasons guard is simply not for everyone. In or Out of the guard program we just want the girl(s) to be happy!!
So, any girl who plan to leave the band program at the end of the first semester needs for their parent to handle that schedule change request in the Guidance Department in December before Christmas holidays, and any girl who does not want to tryout again simply does not sign up for the next tryout when we put the list up. :0)

Homecoming Week--Game 5!!
So very proud of the job the girls & the band did on Friday and Saturday!!
Special thanks to Wendy Johnson & Marcia Wright for their "bun help" on Saturday afternoon, also a huge thank you to Amy Salter who was willing to make a quick run to Party City for us. Last but not least we thank the wonderful Dads/Gentlemen...aka "caped crusaders"...who helped get the drum/props ready...their willingness to go the extra mile for the show to run smoothly and safely was a God send.
Looking ahead to Homecoming Week...Vandalism vs. Pranks!!
Please make sure that you know & respect the difference in vandalism and pranks when you are out and about during Homecoming week...
Vandalism is anything done to cause harm to a person, a place, or a thing. Vandalism leaves damage that requires "fixing". Vandalism causes people to get in trouble, it damages property, it puts our school activities at risk, and most importantly it puts safety & well being at risk. Examples: spray painting, sugaring, salting, glittering, egging, shave creaming, breaking, tearing up, stealing, or use of profane/suggestive language. Vandalism is wrong!!
Pranks are things done that don't cause damage or harm to a person, place, or thing. TP in trees/yards, signs draped over fencing or rails, sidewalk chalk are all examples of pranks that don't require anything but a little cleanup...no damage left after.
Parents please know where your babies are and who they are with during homecoming week...don't need anyone in trouble and more importantly don't need anyone injured/harmed in any way.
***********************************************************
Monday = Wear PJs/bring poms for possible parade to elementary = required for Tigerettes! Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = optional homecoming dress up for Tigs!
Monday - Wednesday = athletic shoes and moveable clothes 7th period.
Tuesday night = 6-9...ts/shorts/athletic shoes/water or sports drink (big jugs no longer needed since weather changed)...please plan for drop off and pick up to avoid "homecoming car issues" while we practice. If we could have some band parents hanging out/monitoring the areas around the bandroom and in the parking lot it would sure be a big help.
Thursday afternoon til 5...ts/shorts/athletic shoes/water or sports drink.
Emailed to all on Monday afternoon...Band and Tigerettes will be participating in the community pep rally at memorial park on Thursday night at 8 p.m. What time to report and what to wear will be announced during 7th period all this week. Tig non-drivers will need a parent/guardian with them at the park please.
Friday = Elementary Pep Rally @ 9 a.m. Afternoon @ TBA.
Tigs will dance at both morning & afternoon pep rallies wearing Pep Rally Uniform and jazz shoes. Hair with red ribbon. They will arrive Friday morning in Pep Rally attire and will bring with them Jeans/Tiger For Life T/shoes to wear during classtime.
The OG homecoming trend of checking out for lunch and checking back in has caused various issues of concern the past few years...teachers mad giving zeros, timeframe infractions, problems at local restaurants, hurt feelings amongst girls, extra worry confusion for directors...so checking out and back in WILL NOT be an option for Tigerettes. As always a doctor/dentist/court excuse would be required for absences/checkins/outs on Friday and they would be verified for authenticity.
Report time for the game Friday night is 5:30. The band will perform the halftime show PREGAME at 6 p.m. Please make sure all your family and friends are aware of the PREGAME PERFORMANCE. Asian Costume entire night, heavy natural makeup, and HAIR IN BUN except for Lauren & Makenzi who will "twig up high". Homecoming Court activities will take place at halftime...congrats Lauren & Makenzi!!
************************************************************
Band iPad raffle money/stubs/unsold tickets must be in to Mr. Henson by
this Friday, September 28th.
We please need $10 from each Tigerette by Monday or Tuesday of Homecoming week. The money will be used to help purchase Homecoming/Senior, and End of Season gifts that our group gives/gets. Girls turn in $$ during 7th period to Donna or Rebecca. As always, parents will receive a Guard Spending report at the end of the season.
WG forms/fee due by October 1st. (Those doing WG will be given Tiger For Life T's to sell this week to help us get rid of remaining stock)

Game 4 & Jamboree!
Update Wednesday Morning...girls must have their own hair colored elastics, bobby pins, sock/donut, brush/comb, and strong hairspray on Friday & Saturday. We have Senior and Junior Moms coming in to help do hair on Saturday afternoon. Girls should arrive on Saturday with straight hair in a high ponytail or high bun. Please make sure your daughter has proper hair items with here when she arrives and that you all have practiced enough that she knows whether her hair works best with a sock or a donut. If layers are short and cause a problem in creating a smooth, neat bun please make sure you have a hair colored ballet bun net to fit over the top. We emailed a couple pics that might be helpful...and everything needs to be hair color. Thanks!!
Great job by band & guard last Friday night...so excited about jamboree week ahead!! Please note a few new things that should help the group experience go more smoothly & then as always the basics and this week's plans for review...
1. Double laps start today! Every tidbit of info for the Guard from this point will be listed here on the blog. If it is listed here each girl is responsible for making it happen. The opposite is also true, if it is not explained somewhere on the blog girls obviously will not be held responsible...we are not trying to trick anyone...haha.
2. Captains and their family members are asked not to respond to calls, emails, or texts related to things explained on the blog. Simply put...it is not fair for their senior experience/personal time to be clouded with questions about things already detailed for everyone on the blog.
3. We have had home games and an away game so the basic processes for operation should be evident. The blog will now be the "one & only stop" for all Guard info. Directors will text when the blog is posted or updated during the week, but other than that they will email or text girls and parents only in event of urgent or emergency situations.
4. Our practice plans for this week are drastically different because of rain coming in today and tomorrow. Please see that info below.
Review of basic info...
Blog updates for clarity or correction after the initial post of the week will always show up in red.
No tardies, checkins, or checkouts on Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays without a doctor's excuse. School, band, guard rules apply.
Guard gloves are needed at every practice/game/performance.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays during 7th period girls need athletic type shoes and clothes they can practice in. Changing clothes is not required these periods due to time constraints.
Tuesday nights, Thursday afterschools girls will need weather appropriate practice clothes and athletic type shoes.
No boyfriends or visitors at rehearsals.
Friday dress/hair/makeup & any pep rally plans will be announced during 7th period during each week...girls must listen in class and are expected to follow verbal instructions provided.
Pep Rally uniform is worn with nude one strap bra and jazz shoes.
Black uniform is worn with regular strap black bra, Leggs Sheer Energy (sheer to the waist) pantyhose in SUNTAN, and jazz shoes.
Costume is worn with black or nude regular strap bra and jazz shoes.
Bra straps in each case should match the color of the bra. Spanx type garments should be worn as needed to eliminate bounce, jiggle, and rolls. Bodystocking was provided for warmth and will be worn with costume when needed later in the season.
Jazz shoes should be wiped clean.
Pep/uniform/costume should be spot cleaned only.
Guard bag should always contain poms, black guard jacket, black blanket, and clear ponchos.
Game/Contest day nails must be clear or french manicure.
No jewelry or visible tattoos on game/contest days.
Tigerettes are required to be in the company of at least two other guard members at all times at all rehearsals & games/contests...both home & away...there is safety in numbers.

All must leave campus and are not permitted to return to campus until 15 minutes prior to report time...no exceptions!! Girls can’t be on campus unsupervised. If you live too far to make it back you will need to find a friend who lives closer to go home with that afternoon.
Home Games...girls are dismissed from the band section at the end of the game. No early departures.
Away Games/Contests...members may be checked off the Guard bus at the end of the event. No early departures. Parent/adult is required to go to our bus for check off. Ride should be waiting when we get back to the school. Tigs may only be checked off the bus by their parent or by an ADULT designated in writing by their parent. We are unable to verify notes turned in so please know that any student providing a “fake” note would be written up for providing false information. Cell calls & text can't be used to arrange check off.
Cell Phones & Bus seating (explained to girls 7th period prior to the first away game). Always plan to have a bus partner, seniors are the only ones permitted to sit by themselves when we travel...goal is nobody leftout or alone. Cell phones are put away most of the time when we travel to avoid lack of focus, lack of group involvement, etc.
Parents are welcomed to observe Tuesday night rehearsals. Please make sure that noise is kept to a minimum since we are in the process of instructing & learning. Also know that observers should sit in the end sections of the stadium only. The middle section is used by directors for instruction during the rehearsal. Students only please in the bandroom or school buildings on practice or event nights.

pits :0(
late arrivals to practice/games and forgotten items seem to be increasing so "double laps" will be required beginning monday when those things occur.
rebecca and i will appreciate parent attention to departure times from practice, games, and contests. we have had to wait as little as 10 mins and as much as 45 for parents to get their girls. we have had to wait at the end of every rehearsal held since school started. while we understand an occasional emergency may cause late pickup, habitual late pick up does get taxing on us. please respect the little off time we share with our families during the fall by picking your daughter up on time. we thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
updated Tuesday night, 9/11...
tigs received 20 iPad raffle tickets at the end of school today. tickets are to be sold for $1 each...please sell as many as you can to help raise funds for the band program...no checks. $$/ stubs for drawing and any unsold tickets are due back to donna by noon on homecoming day, friday 9-28-12. all lost or stolen tickets must be paid for by that same date/time.

Guard rehearsal times are sometimes different than the band's...this is true twice this week. Please help us with the safety and security of your daughter by making sure that your drop off/pickup plans allign with Guard practice times. If your daugther must ride to & from rehearsals with band members who are working on a different rehearsal schedule we MUST have and email or letter in writing from the parent stating that fact.
Tuesday = Guard practice 6-9 p.m. in t's/shorts/water
Thursday = Guard afterschool until 5 p.m. in t's/shorts/water
Practice wear update...starting this week we will be in ts/shorts only on Tuesday nights and Thursday afternoons. 7th periods on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays girls can practice in what they wear to school as long as the clothing and shoes allow them to move & practice properly. Visitors to the band section are expected to speak and move on. Restroom visits must be taken care of prior to game & during third quarter break...this is a privilege...NO PDA...you must be with two other Guard members even at home games. After the games/contests when we are away...Tigerettes may be checked off the bus at the end of the game/contest. Parent/adult is required to come to our bus to check the girl off. Those who ride the bus home MUST have a ride waiting on them when we get back to the school. Cell phones will not be used for last minute travel permission this season!!! Tigerettes may only be checked off the bus at the end of away games by their parent OR by an ADULT designated in writing by their parent. We are unable to verify notes turned in so please know that any student providing a “fake” note would be written up for providing false info which is a Class 3 offense. We thank you in advance for your cooperation regarding policy issues like these and ask that you remember they are not intended to cause student/parent problems, but are put in place to help ensure the safety of all participants.

Games and Contests and Info...oh my!!
Lot's of info presented here...please take time to read everything!!
Please remember that we always follow doctor's instructions. Parents please help us by seeing that your daughter stays well hydrated and that she is getting plenty of rest at night. Girls please help us by not drinking or eating after each other, by staying hydrated, by getting enough sleep, and also by not participating in activities that could cause injury. If you are a girl who has previous problems with sprains/strains please make sure you are wearing proper support.
Everyone must realize as well that when the doctor says "no participation" that means the girl dresses for practice or performance but "sits out"...girls get back in quicker if they watch & know what is going on. If the doctor says "no school" that means she can't attend band events/games/contests at all. Performance and/or travel on Fridays and Saturdays will be based on ability to practice full out, and ability to learn the work missed while sick or injured. Thanks in advance for doing your part to stay healthy so we have everyone on the field in the coming weeks.
Girls are doing a great job thus far!! We are VERY proud of the progress and look forward to the continued growth of the show. Hope to have a good "skeleton" of our show next Friday night. We also appreciate the wonderful support provided by our Guard Parents...we doubt any other Guard in the world has such a great group of parents to work with...thank you so very much for all you have done & will do to make the season great!!!
Tuesday night and Thursday afternoon practice will continue in shorts and t's until the weather really cools down for us...too hot for black leotard and shorts/leggings.
Make sure you stock clear ponchos & stain sticks for the season ahead!!
Reminder that all state, county, & local procedures/rules apply at, for, and in regard to events & student participation. No tardies, checkins, or checkouts on Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays. Any absence on those days will require a doctor or dental excuse, a funeral excuse, or principal excuse.
Public service announcement...
Please make sure social sites like facebook and twitter stay clean. Make sure your walls and photos are set to PRIVATE so only you & your friends can see them. Pics, comments, etc. on your page should always represent you & our group well. Check your pages often and make sure to delete any questionable content should it pop up. Think before you post...LOTS of folks read what you say/post on public forums, and that can get you (and us) into very sticky situations. Remember and apply Thumper's rule to all posts/pics..."if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." In 2012 Thumper would prob add..."if you can't post or load something nice online, then don't post or load any content at all."
If you are the parent of a daughter who has a smart phone/laptop/ipad/ipod type device we strongly suggest that you have one too...if they have a fb or twitter you should at least consider having them too and also access to their accounts. Kids under the age of 18 are children posting/playing in what can easily become a very adult online world. Sadly, we don't live in the past where girls used a diary or journal to vent their feelings, they don't use a format that only they or you see & read. Today the things they write and pictures they post (even set to private) are seen and circulate thru the whole community...not just because it's Oak Grove and people talk, but simply because the kids put it out there for the all to see and it is the social media world we live in today.
All that said...Tigerettes are expected to behave in an appropriate manner at all times...even more so at school events. In or out of uniform every choice you make has a consequence. Do not jeopardize your reputation or the reputation of our Guard by participating in public displays of affection, ignore and do not respond to ugly talk or gestures. All school rules, band rules, guard rules apply at school events/activities. Pay attention, make sure your words and your actions stay positive at all times...work hard 24/7 to make a GREAT IMPACT not just a GOOD IMPRESSION!!
For the future...
Tigerettes will dress alike every Friday we have a game. The required dress will be announced each day of that school week. You will be assigned a specific top, hairstyle, jeans, & will bring your pepwear with you to school. Make sure to listen, plan , and do what is expected...no checkouts or calls home.

After the games/contests when we are away...Tigerettes may be checked off the bus at the end of away events. Parent/adult is required to come to our bus to check you off. Tigs are not permitted to check off our bus and ride a different band bus home. If you ride home on a band bus it is the same one you came on & you will be expected to help unload the truck before you leave campus. Those who ride the bus home MUST have a ride waiting on them when we get back to the school. Cell phones will not be used for last minute travel permission this season!!! Tigerettes may only be checked off the bus at the end of away games by their parent or by an ADULT designated in writing by their parent. We are unable to verify notes turned in so please know that any student providing a “fake” note would be written up for providing false info. We thank you in advance for your cooperation regarding policy issues like these and ask that you remember they are not intended to cause student/parent problems, but are put in place to help ensure the safety of all participants.

No boyfriends at rehearsals!!!
Parents are welcomed to observe Tuesday night rehearsals. Please make sure however that noise is kept to a minimum because we are in the process of instructing & learning. Also know that observers should sit in the end sections of the stadium only. The middle section is used by directors for instruction during the rehearsal. Students only in the bandroom and school buildings on Tuesday, Friday, or Saturday nights. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
Lastly...
Please don’t forget that laps are required when you show for rehearsal/events late or unprepared. We thank you in advance for being a responsible member...arriving on time and having all items needed for rehearsal. We also appreciate “no whining” when your lack of preparation or time management sends you around the field. Remember it is hard work and a good attitude that create success!!

BOA Regional @ JSU is Saturday, October 13
Hoover Band Contest is Saturday, October 20
BOA Super Regional @ Georgia Dome in Atlanta is Saturday, October 27
We will not need the cases of water for the fridge this fall as was mentioned earlier...the much shorter 7th period class makes our time on the field 40 mins max so it not needed like it was in the past on that long block schedule.
Also...girls will keep their weapons gloves with them after this week...we can move faster if the gloves are in the bag with 7th period clothes & shoes.
See everyone at the required Booster meeting next Monday night at 6:30!!

Update for Guard & their Parents!!
UPDATED 8/21/12 @ 11:15 A.M........
GUARD GIRLS AND PARENTS SHOULD HAVE TWO EMAILS THIS AFTERNOON...THE FIRST CONTAINS INFORMATION ABOUT THE RESCHEDULED BOOSTER MEETING ON MONDAY, AUG 27TH. THE SECOND CONTAINS AN ATTACHMENT WITH THE HOME CONCESSION WORK SCHEDULE FROM BOOSTER PRESIDENT BARBARA MORELAND. THANKS!! :0)
The Fall Jamboree Game at St Clair County HS has been moved to Thursday, August 23rd. Jr High, JV, and Varsity will play starting at 7 p.m. Tigerettes and Band will not travel to this event so if you go on your own please remember school rules apply at all school events!! Please plan to go and support our team...as always look good & be sweet...GO TIGERS! :0)
The required Band Booster meeting on Thursday night, August 23rd @ 6:30 p.m. will be rescheduled due to the conflict with the game mentioned above. We will post the new date here as soon as we have it. Here is the info about that required meeting for future reference...
The JefCo Health Department presentation for concession workers and other important Band Booster information will be discussed. Tigerettes must have a parent at this meeting and the Tigerette themselves must be present if they plan to work a JV or Jr High game.
Concession work at OG games is the major money maker for our band. The "Home Game Concession Work Schedule" will be posted for you next week. If a Guard parent is unable to work as assigned or prefers not to work the assigned event they may turn in a $50 payout check--per child and/or event to Donna/Rebecca at the required Booster meeting on ??--see above. This is a new procedure for handling Guard payouts this year...in the past the pay outs were due one week prior to event schedule, but that always left concessions coordinators scrambling to find replacement workers at the last minute.
Guard parents who do not payout by the required Booster meeting are expected to work their assigned date and are responsible for finding a health dept. certified adult replacement worker for themselves if they fall ill. Obviously sick folks can't work in concessions. Guard parents who have a date conflict need to swap and are responsible for handling that swap on their own. Those who do not pay out and do not get a replacement worker are considered "No Shows" and will be accessed a $50 or more payout which must be cleared with cash or money order before the next scheduled Guard event.

Guard members WILL NOT ATTEND rehearsals on August 9th, 10th & 15th. Those rehearsal dates are for horns & drums only and our Guard members ARE NOT PERMITTED on campus during those rehearsals.
Pictures for the fall football program will be made FRIDAY, AUG 3rd. This is a change in plans...more specific information will be posted on the blog prior to that date.
If you are absent from required camp dates above you must have a verifiable doctor excuse, a verifiable court date, or a verifiable death in your immediate family. A family emergency is defined as a situation which requires the specific attention of said Guard member and does not occur on a regular basis. Work is not an excused absence...if you need a letter documenting your rehearsal schedule for your employer please let us know.
TARDIES...if you are on time...you are late!! Guard Captains are expected 15 minutes before call time and 15 minutes after. All should plan ahead so you don't have to run laps...tardy = 1 lap per minute late...double laps if a Captain. We caution Guard members who will be driving to and from band to make sure that you maintain a timeline that does not put you at risk for getting a speeding ticket and/or something worse. If you are old enough to drive yourself and others to band then you are certainly old enough to get up and leave the house in plenty of time!!!
Guard members are not permitted to leave campus during band camp. Student drivers may NOT be in and out of cars during the day. Make sure you have what you need when you come inside each morning. NO LUNCH DELIVERIES...they cause a distraction to our timeline so you must bring your lunch with you or buy it from concessions. Guard members always eat together in the guard room everyday...we don't run wild on campus during that hour.
---------------------------------------------------------
Here is what you bring with you daily...
Lunch and/or cash to buy concessions
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Water Jug
Beach towel or yoga mat
Guard gloves
Bandaids (if feet & hands tend to blister)
Fem items as needed
1st day all will bring flag & $100 band fee...weapons bring rifle/sabre. Checks should be made out to OGHS Band. If you bounced a check last spring you must pay with cash or a money order.
-----------------------------------------------------
Here is what you should wear...
No makeup
Hair in ponytail
Soffe type shorts*
Tshirt**
Athletic shoes (no vanns/converse)
Low cut socks
*soffe shorts will not be rolled so high that we see cheekage!
**during camp due to temp and amount of time we practice we allow tank tops and/or cami style summer tops as long as BRA STRAPS MATCH COLOR. During school you will have to wear a tshirt with your shorts during 7th period.
--------------------------------------------------------
All fall uniforms, costumes, pep wear, shoes, bags, etc. will be distributed after lunch the first day of camp. This is always VERY exciting, but does not require Mom's help...lol. Moms will see everything when the girls bring them home that day.
Guard Girls on that first Monday will try on every item so we can swap things around and get everyone the best fit possible. Girls MUST wear white or nude color modest undies that day...we don't need sheer bras and thongs when playing dress up!!
We must keep everything looking new and fresh so please note NO FALL ITEM is to be worn until the assigned time. Parent must get Director approval on any and every alteration made to any item. Alterations are paid for by the parent.
Girls will get lots of stuff that first day so make sure you bring a LARGE SHOPPING BAG with you to hold it all!!! Please note...Tigerettes with outstanding band debt of any kind will not be issued fall guard items until the debt is paid in full via cash or money order.
--------------------------------------------------------
BOYS!!! Boyfriends are not permitted at rehearsals. Guard girls who date boys in the band must follow the same rule...you will not be a couple at rehearsals/events. Please explain this to your boyfriends...if you can't then believe us...WE WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TOO!!
------------------------------------------------------
APPEARANCE
Please make sure that your hair color and length meet the group guidelines BEFORE arriving the first day of camp. No hair should be too dark or too light. Any highlights must be natural looking. Remember you are expected to work off your natural hair color which is the color at the root and that your hair length must be shoulder or longer when prepared for performance. No bangs.
If you have put on a few pounds over the summer please use these next few weeks to trim it off. Extra pounds inhibit your ability to move with ease. Cut out sodas, drink lots of water, and make healthy food choices...you will be surprised how successful you will be in getting those pounds to disappear!!
No visible piercings other than ears. Belly piercings should be bandaided flat under your shirt for every rehearsal and performance. Visible tattoos must be covered with skincolored waterproof dermablend type makeup at every rehearsal and performance. These guidelines will also apply during each & every school day!!
--------------------------------------------------------
Guard Girls and Moms who paid last spring to participate in our annual beach trip will get a letter with trip info the first week of camp. We have a fun, safe trip planned to the Gulf Shores area. Dates are August 9th - 12th. Plan to leave early morning on the 9th. Transportation plans will be detailed in the info letter as well.
--------------------------------------------------------
School starts for students on Monday, August 20th. We will be on a 7th period schedule...same classes, same schedule, everyday Monday - Friday. Tuesday night rehearsals will remain 6-9 p.m. and Thursday afterschool rehearsals will be until 5 every week to help makeup rehearsal time lost when we went to 7 period scheduling.
Lastly please remember that OGHS Tigerettes are expected to set the standard for good behavior, good grades, and a good work ethic. 24/7...at school, at home, and in your social lives we always expect the best from the girls. This requires a mind, body, and spirit that is free from anything or anybody that alters thinking and behavior in a negative way. Review the Tigerette Trait list received the first day you made guard...if you make a focus effort to make sure you try to display those traits everyday it will make a huge difference in the success of our group as a whole.
Tentative Fall Contest Dates...subject to change. Please mark these dates on your family calendar for band events as shown:
JefCoEd Band Jamboree Sept 22 OR Sept 29
Band Contests October 13, 20, and 26/27
We are sooooooo excited about the fall season and hope you are too!!
See you all in a few weeks!! love, love.....KATA 2012!!!

Have a Sweet Summer!!
Happy Graduation to our wonderful Seniors...
Jamie, Ashlyn, Danielle, Jessica!!
Updated Summer Band Camp Schedule...band camp will start one week later than planned due to the new start date for JefCoEd schools. Here is the firm practice plan for Tigerettes...
July 30 - Aug 3 = Band Camp 8-4, M-F
Aug 6 - Aug 8 = Band Camp 8-4, M-W
Aug 9-12 = Guard Beach Trip for those who paid!!
Tuesday, August 14 = Night practice 6-9 (program pics made)
Thursday, August 16 = Night practice 6-9
Monday, August 20 = School starts for students.
All practices listed above are required!!
Band Leadership will have karate every Tuesday afternoon 3:30 - 4:30 starting June 5th...ending July 24th. We will not meet the week of July 4th and leaders must attend four of the seven weeks scheduled. $5 cash per person per week.
Fall Weapon Line Practice is every Tuesday 5-6 p.m. starting June 5th and
ending July 24th. We will not meet the week of July 4th and weapons must attend four of the seven weeks scheduled. $5 cash per person per week.
Band Boosters will be sponsoring a summer yard sale fundraiser in July!! Donations will be accepted during the month of June. Please box/bag your donations and self-load them into the band trailer now located at Wendy Feltman's home on Golden Lane almost directly across from the high school. You do not have to call ahead...just pull in, put your stuff in the trailer, and make sure the trailer door is closed when you leave. We will appreciate anything donated...all proceeds go to OGHS Band Booster General Fund. YARD SALE WILL BE HELD JULY 14TH @ HOME PLATE DINER IN HUEYTOWN...TIME TBA!!
Final Grades...report cards should be mailed home the first week of June. You will be contacted that week if we find problems with your academic progress that put you on probation or render you ineligible as a performer.
Off Season Hair...all agreed to maintain a shoulder length hairstyle. While we feel sure that some of you may need a good trim as the school year ends, do not think for a second that a chin length hairstyle is okay...no matter your grade level we view this as defiance...hair must be shoulder length or longer when prepared for performance with no bangs...very simply stated, it is not what you agreed to do when you tried out last January so just don’t do it.
Hair Color...NATURAL!!! A few of you have gone too dark or too white...make sure this is corrected before you come back for summer band camp. HAIR COLOR CHANGE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED DURING MARCHING OR WINTER SEASON. Please have real hairdressers do highlighting/lowlighting/coloring and have them work off your natural hair color...fyi...the real color of your hair is the color growing out of your head at the root...lol.
Fall Hair Style...sock bun on top with hair flat ironed straight in the back...no bangs or twigs. Please learn how to do a sock bun this summer...also make sure you find a way to do the straight hair thing...practice makes perfect.
Off Season Weight...remember that extra pounds weaken your ability to move & perform with ease. Please eat sensibly & stay in shape...uniform/costume alterations are paid for by parents.
Off Season Skills...please take an honest look at your skills in all areas and work to improve in the off season. Flags, weapons, and dance!!
Social Media...in today’s world, social media plays a huge part in our day-to-day lives. In efforts to keep our social media profiles showing nothing but our best, here are a few tips to keeping your profile clean, powerful and positive this summer. First, avoid using offensive or derogatory language on social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Lots of people have access to these sites and you want to be sure and present the best you possible. Next, keep personal arguments off social media sites and remember to keep your photos respectable. Social media sites are no place for mean words or for photos that suggest anything other than a positive image. One last online behavior to avoid is the most current trend in social media--posting a location, status, or photo that "appears positive" but in reality is only being put out there to jab at someone or hurt their feelings...a location, post, or pic intended solely to let others know they are NOT included is an example of a very negative social media trend we should all work hard to avoid. So please, consider all these things & think before you post...the old saying still rings true...if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!! (these social media tips apply to texting and email as well!!)
Last but not least...please make a habit of checking our blog this summer!! If you need to know something you should be able to find it on here. The blog has replaced notes mailed home. It is a quicker and more effective way for us to get you the info needed. Tigerettes are held accountable for everything posted.
Please note: the Guard blog may contain different info than the Band blog...Tigs always follow instructions found on the Guard blog. Band follows instructions found on the Band blog. Thanks!!!
:0)
Philippians 4:8...finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. :0)
