Summit Holiday Parade Info

Here are our Parade Plans!!

Tigs need WHITE TURTLENECK, WHITE MATTE TIGHTS or LEGGINGS, WHITE FOLD DOWN SOCKS, AND CLEAN WHITE KED-LIKE SHOES...not ivory, cream, winter white...WHITE!!!

Friday, November 22nd = Tigs wear WHITE undies underneath their school clothes!! BRING...White White turtleneck, white white matte tights or leggings, white fold down socks, CLEAN white ked-like shoes. Hair down & straight with full makeup all day...have what you need for touchups with you. Tigs will dress during 5th block into Candy Cane costume...headband, gloves, wrist bells, dress, boot covers. Bring extra layers of white tops and white leggings to add warmth...ALSO BRING A CLEAR RAIN PONCHO FROM YOUR GUARD BAG FOR WARMTH & WEATHER!!

Departure for the Summit...we do not take cars...parent has to drive and traffic is crazy in that area so thru the years we found this is the very best plan...

Tigs will be dressed for parade and dismissed at 2:00 Friday around back by the bandroom to avoid school buses & Summit traffic flow problems that always seem to occur because folks love this event. This is a field trip so you do not have to check-out. Parents please be in your cars/motor running ready to roll at that time but please...DO NOT BLOCK OR IMPEDE BUS TRAFFIC!! We have a few girls who will need a ride because of their mom's work schedule. Moms please...if you have an extra seatbelt for a Tig or two please have your daughter communicate that info to others. We want everyone headed to everyone headed to the Summit @ 2 but not later than 3:10.

Please travel straight to the Summit area and then enjoy an early snack/dinner or light shopping before our Tigerette report time of 5:45 in front of Barnes & Nobles. The parade will end at Toys R US on the opposite end of the facilities so parents please drop off your Tig at Barnes & Nobles @ 5:45 then you go park your car at Toys R Us...YOU WILL BE SO GLAD YOU DID!!

Again this year we expect there will be a few parade stop & dance points...please watch the parade to see where other units are stopping so you don't miss the fun. Have your cameras and video equipment ready...this is a super fun, cute way to start your holiday season!

Of course this is required event...a doctor excuse would be needed if missed and if doc note says you are too sick to participate then you are too sick to attend the event OR to be out & about all over social media thru the weekend!!

Candy Cane costumes will be yours to keep after the parade!!

Finally Fall!!

So proud of every girl in the program and so thankful for Guard parents who support their daughter every step of the way. We appreciate the focused attention to detail and willingness to learn, change, and go with the flow during this season.

Saturday, October 19th...Hoover Contest estimated timeline is 9 am to 10 pm

Monday, October 21st...Dinner & A Show @ OGHS estimated timeline is 5 pm to 8 pm

Saturday, November 2nd...Alabama Marching Band State Championships timeline TBA

Friday, November 22nd...Summit Christmas Parade details TBA

Friday, December 13th...Band/Guard Christmas Party details TBA

Other Important Reminders...

All Tig rules, regulations, policies and procedures apply now and during the remainder of the school year. Those already on probation need to be very mindful from now until end of May that another visit to ISS or a suspension...for any reason...will remove you from the squad.

Tigerette Budget...Guard money was spent & financial sheets for Fall 2019 will go home with girls last week of October.

Band Fees...all took care of this...Thank You!!

Home Concessions...parents worked or prepaid buyout OR owe a no show fee NOW...Thank You!!

Off Season Fundraising...Our 15 Concert Band girls are required to continue to participate in band fundraisers. Our 14 WG girls are required to fundraise for WG.

Spring Band/Guard Trip...payments are due monthly...watch NYC Remind texts...please keep those notifications turned ON!!

The Summit Christmas Parade is Friday, November 22nd...REQUIRED EVENT. Info on this event will be announced as soon as we have details confirmed. Timeline and costuming TBD.

Band/Guard Christmas Party is Friday, December 13th...it is required!! Cute Christmas Casual dress. Students will bring an assigned dish to share...there will be dancing & karaoke. It is always a blast!! Moms welcome...no siblings or non-band friends. More details posted closer to event.

Tigerette Tryout sign up for next year is in December!! A new physical form will be required for tryouts. No late forms will be accepted. Girls must have everything done, ready, and turned in on time or they will not be permitted to participate...this includes returning vets!! Tigerette Tryouts = January 13-17, 2020. A NEW doctor signed physical form will be due at tryouts. Sign up and more tryout info will be given out first week of December. Captains will be needed daily afterschool that week to assist with teaching tryout material and rehearsal.

Concert Band and Winter Guard begin on Tues, Nov 5th. Guard girls will receive a grade 1st 9 weeks that reflects their work as a Tigerette on the field. Looking ahead their work ethic in class along with unexcused absences or checkouts from band class will also impact 9 week grades first semester. The only “excused” absence from band & wg class remains the same...medical excuse, court excuse or death in immediate family...a “Principal excused absence” for a college day is also acceptable for Seniors in the spring semester. Band/WG is your scheduled class and it is a graded subject. Do not show up late with a pass from other teachers, & do not ask to leave the either class to complete work in other classes you have scheduled. Band is not an off period or study hall. Please also remember that our BDs also have input as to those chosen for leadership roles in coming years....a girl who is “stellar” on the field but a “stinker” the remainder of the time should not expect selection for leadership.

Holiday Concert, District Concert, Spring Concert...all TBA...these are required events!! Employers can’t require a student to miss a required school event or a rehearsal for an event. If written verification for employer is needed see your BD immediately. It is STUDENT'S responsibility to inform the employer about school required events in a timely manner...failure to do so will not excuse your absence. Please make sure that you listen to Band Directors for information announced about these events.

2nd Semester Schedule Changes...please be reminded that any member requesting a schedule change out of band for 2nd semester automatically removes themselves as a member of the band program & from their position as a Tigerette. No schedule changes are permitted mid-first semester. Written request from Parent for 2nd semester changes are due in the guidance office during November. If you are not following procedure/rules, if you tell others you don’t like guard, or if you are posting negative comments/pics/snaps on social media...you obviously might want to consider leaving at semester. We want every girl to be happy with their life choices. As stated and signed for/notarized prior to tryouts...Captains who choose to leave the program at semester (regardless of reason) will receive a grade penalty for second nine weeks and obviously would not participate in either the spring trip or band banquet.

Off Season Grades...Tigs must maintain an overall 70% average each grading period. Parents will be notified in writing if there is a problem with grades. Members on “Grade Probation” will be dismissed from the squad if they do not improve/maintain an overall 70%.

Off Season Conduct...Tigs are still expected to maintain Satisfactory conduct. Stay out of the office!! Follow the dress code, do not be tardy, do not skip class, do not cheat, do not lie, be respectful, keep your lips (and everything else) to yourself, be a kind, sweet, cooperative young lady at school, in your social life, and at home!!! If school, social, and home problems are impacting your Guard involvement those issues are being logged and you must understand fully that those type issues can impact leadership decisions in the future.

Off Season Hair...Tigs agreed to maintain a shoulder length hairstyle. While we feel sure that some of you may need a good trim as the season ends, do not think for a second that a chin or shoulder touching length hairstyle, or drastic color change is okay...we view this as defiance. Very simply stated, it is not what you agreed to do when you tried out last year so don’t do it!!! COLOR = NATURAL!!! Please have hairdressers do any/highlighting/lowlighting/coloring by working off your natural hair color...the real color of your hair is the one growing at the roots. Again...know that continual hair issues can impact leadership decisions down the road.

Weight Gain...extra pounds weaken your ability to move & perform with ease. PLEASE eat healthy, drink water & keep moving...we need you healthy now and tryouts for next year are in just about 12 weeks.

Skills...please take an honest look at skills in all areas and work for continued improvement. Flags, weapons, and body!! Girls are not guaranteed a spot on next year’s squad. We have several girls who are working but are struggling to keep up...it would really be in their best interested to take private spin lessons from one of our Juniors or Seniors during November & December to help grow their ability & performance skills.

Tigs and Winter or Spring Sport Participation

Coaches are recruiting our girls because of their strong work ethic. We have NO PROBLEM with Tigs being involved and participating in other school extracurricular activities as long as all involved (student, parent, coaches) understand the following...

1. Tigerette and Band commitments including all in school/out of school practice and all events scheduled for the groups must be the #1 priority. (Winter Guard members are not permitted to participate in other sports during NOV DEC JAN FEB MARCH)

2. Sharing time is not an option when a conflict arises. Tigs must honor the first commitment they made and that was Band/Guard last January when they tried out and made Tigerette/Fall Guard.

3. All Tigerettes must be in their assigned band class all year long. Tigs will not be excused from their assigned band class for anything other than team travel to an off campus game, meet, or match at the time designated by coach in faculty email. They may not miss a band or wg class to practice another sport.

Please remember as well...

Tigerettes will be involved in tryouts for just over a week in January and Tigerette Tryout Clinic attendance is now required by Jefcoed so there is NOT an option to "choose or share" time that week.

And last but not least...one of our VERY favorite things...

END OF SEASON GIFTING!!! UPDATED 10/28/19

We will celebrate the end of fall season on the bus ride TO Hoover on Saturday, November 2nd.

Each of the 28 girls will need to bring their own JUMBO shopping bag and ALL are expected to bring something gifty to put in everyone's bags. Doesn't have to be a certain price or a certain type thing, just needs to be girly & fun!! Let your wallet be the guide on what you purchase/make and be sure you send at least 28 of whatever gift you choose...see below. Please remember we have 5 Seniors who deserve some extra special treatment!! (We will not do food this year)

Gift items must be individually packaged, bagged, or wrapped...packed for travel.

We will have girls bring in boxed/bagged gift ON SATURDAY. Everything MUST be prepped & ready for distribution when they arrive. Each girl will share her gift with others on the ride TO HOOVER...our Seniors and a few others will share their final thoughts on their time as a Tigerette at OGHS.

Senior gifts may be personalized with names (Morgan, Kalli, Zoey, Allyson, Mallory) but all other gifts should be exactly the same without names or grade level markings.

ps...pic frames & season photos are nice but girls already have tons of those via social media. AND HANDLING THINGS THIS WAY WILL ALLOW TIGS TO CHECK OFF THE BUS AS NORMAL TO GO EAT WITHOUT HAVING TO GO HOME TO OG AND THEN DRIVE BACK!!

Tigerette/Fall Guard Camp Prep!!

Hope everyone is having a great summer!!

Plans and prep are underway for a great fall experience. Please make sure you use this month before camp to have yourself fully prepared...healthy eating habits, daily exercise, and lots of stretching will help get/keep you in shape. Get outside and acclimate yourself to sun & heat. Good physical health means you look better which means you will be stronger at practice and a more confident performer on the field. We all know that a major part of good physical, mental, & spiritual health is remaining totally free of any/all chemicals that impair your abilities and judgement. Avoiding smoking, alcohol, and drugs are a MUST for you to be all God intended when He created you!! As part of your family life & as part of your guard/social life...24/7 you are important and it DOES matter who you are, who you are with, and what you do!!!

Moms please don't forget the need to have your daughter prepared for being self sufficient and independent as part of this group. The things we need to see day one in our girls were listed in a previous post.

Full Fall Schedule will go home as part of the band handbook on August 5th. It is a sign and return document that will be due back on Tuesday morning. Tig families should expect to see two exhibition dates and 3 contests during September, October, & November.

Goals we have for the fall were also listed in a previous post. Please review & attempt...the better your individual skills are the better we are as a group!!

Guard Summer Camp Required Dates & Times...please note these are different than band & percussion!!

August 5-9, M-F, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (program pics made sometime this week)

August 12-16, M-F, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

August 20th & 22nd, 5-8 p.m.

August 23rd---First football game of the season.

August 27th is the first day of school for students.

Summer classes, summer jobs, and summer vacations are NOT excused absences...complete all family vacations before August 5th!!

OGHS school registration will be held on campus August 16th. Tigs will be permitted to leave practice to register during their assigned grade level time and then return to practice. Tigs are required to pay the $100 band fee along with other required fees at the time of online and/or school registration.

Tigerettes/Fall Guard Members MUST leave campus promptly at their dismissal time...girls must have someone ready to pickup or a pre-arranged ride home ready to leave campus at dismissal time everyday. Girls are not permitted to be on campus without supervision and thus are not permitted to "hang out" during band or percussion rehearsals. They are only to be on campus at assigned times when directors are present!!

Any absence from required activities must have a verifiable doctor excuse, a verifiable court date, or a verifiable death in immediate family. A family emergency is defined as a situation which requires the specific attention of said Guard member and does not occur on a regular basis.

A new physical form and/or the attending physician's written "clearance" is required for attendance/participation in Tigerette/Fall Guard activities following any illness or hospitalization. Casts, wraps, & supports worn must be accompanied by written instructions from the student's doctor.

Work is not an excused absence...if you need a letter documenting your rehearsal schedule for your employer please let us know. Vacations and other travel should be completed before we start camp OR should be planned to avoid missing practices/events.

If you are on time...you are late!! Arrive 5 or 10 mins before call time to avoid panic. (Guard Captain is expected 15 minutes before call time and 10 minutes after.) Plan ahead so you don't have to run laps...tardy = 1 lap per minute late...double laps if Captain. We caution Guard members & Parents who drive to/from band to make sure that you maintain a timeline that does not put you at risk for getting a speeding ticket and/or something worse. If you are old enough to drive yourself and others to camp you are old enough to get up and leave the house in plenty of time!!! Guard members are not permitted to leave campus during camp. Students may not be in and out of cars during the day. Make sure you have what you need when you come inside each morning. Forgotten items = more laps to run!!

Here is what you bring to camp with you everyday...Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Water Jug, Beach towel AND yoga mat, Guard gloves, Band-aids (if feet & hands tend to blister), Fem items!! You will need to bring your lunch and an XL shopping bag the first day!! You will also bring school owned flags & weapons & stools the first day...leave your personal owned equipment at home.

Here is what you should wear... NO makeup, hair in ponytail, Soffe or Nike type shorts*, Tshirt** Athletic shoes(no converse, keds, or vans), low cut socks *shorts will not be rolled so high that we see cheekage! **due to temp and amount of time we practice we allow tank tops and/or cami style summer tops as long as BRA STRAPS ARE NUDE OR MATCH COLOR. During school you will have to wear a tshirt with your shorts during 5th block every day.

All fall items...uniforms, costumes, pep wear, shoes, bags, etc. will be distributed after lunch the first day of camp. This is always VERY exciting, but does not require Mom's help...Moms will see everything when the girls bring them home that day. Girls will try on every item so we can swap things around and get everyone the best fit possible. So PLEASE wear white or nude color MODEST STYLE undies that day...we don't need sheer bras and cheeky thongs when playing dress up!! You must keep everything looking new and fresh so NO FALL ITEM are to be worn or carried until the assigned time.

NO PICTURES WEARING OR SHOWING ANY FALL ITEM IS PERMITTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA UNTIL THE DIRECTORS GIVE THE OK!!

Parent must get Director approval on any/every alteration made to any item. Alterations are paid for by the parent. Details concerning alterations will be posted on the blog after fitting the group and see what our needs are for the fall. Note as well...NOBODY should be wearing Guard items...new items or old items the same rule...no friends and no cute boys/boyfriends. We will get lots of stuff that first day so make sure you bring an XLARGE SHOPPING BAG with you to hold it all!!

Please note...Tigerettes/Fall Guard with outstanding band debt of any kind will not be issued fall guard items until the debt is paid in full via cash or money order.

BOYS!!! Boyfriends are not permitted at rehearsals. Guard girls who date boys in the band must follow the same rule...you will not be a couple at rehearsals. Please explain this to your boyfriends...if you can't WE WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TOO!!

APPEARANCE...

Please make sure that your hair color and length meet the group guidelines BEFORE arriving the first day of camp. No hair should be too dark or too light. Any highlights must be natural looking. Remember you are expected to work off your natural hair color which is the color at the root and that your hair length must be shoulder or longer when prepared for performance. No bangs. Hair color must remain the same color the entire fall season!! If you have put on a few pounds over the summer please use these remaining days to start to trim it off. Extra pounds inhibit your ability to move with ease. Cut out sodas, drink lots of water, make healthy food choices and exercise...you will be surprised how successful you will be in getting those pounds to disappear!!

No visible piercings other than ears. Belly piercings must be bandaided flat under shirt for every rehearsal and performance. Visible tattoos must be covered with skincolored waterproof bandaids at every rehearsal and performance. These guidelines also apply during each & every school day as well! On game days one pair of lobe earring will be assigned and all other jewelry must be removed.

Looking Ahead...

Plans each week will post here by 1 p.m. each Tuesday during the school year for Tig & parent review. REMIND will be used as well with updates & reminders. Please do not delete remind texts sent your way...keep them so you have them to refer back to as needed. Tigs responsible for ALL content posted or texted. Please read and re-read before you email one of us. Please remember as well that texting us should happen only in urgent situations. We expect & greatly appreciate your respect of our off time when we are at home with our families.

Lastly please remember that OGHS Tigerettes are expected to set the standard for good behavior, good grades, and a good work ethic. 24/7...at school, at home, in your social lives and on social media we always expect the best from you!! This requires a mind, body, and spirit that is free from anything or anybody that alters your thinking and/or your behavior in a negative way. Review the Tigerette Trait list you received the first day you made the team...if you make a solid effort to make sure you try to display those traits everyday it will make a huge difference in your personal success and as well the success of our group as a whole.

We are sooooooo excited about the fall and hope you are too!! See you on August 5th!!

August 23rd---First football game of the season.

August 27th is the first day of school for students.

Summer classes, summer jobs, and summer vacations are NOT excused absences...complete all family vacations before August 5th!!

Final Grades...report cards should be mailed home the mid-March and the first week of June. You will be contacted that week if we find problems with your academic progress or behavior that put you on probation or render you ineligible as a performer.

Plans and prep are underway for great experiences next year. Please make sure you use the spring/summer weeks to have yourself fully prepared...healthy eating habits, exercise, and lots of stretching will help get/keep you in shape. As part of your family life & as part of your guard/social life...24/7 it is important and DOES matter who you are, who you are with, and what you do!!!

Moms please don't forget the need to have your daughter prepared for being self sufficient and independent as part of this group. Girls should learn to do their own hair & makeup...full natural color makeup with red tint lip, sock bun, high pony, front pulled up/back down, and flat ironing on top with hair flat ironed straight in the back, loose curls...no bangs or twigs hanging on face. ALL TIGS should be prepared to handle their own money, order at concessions, pack a show bag with all they need, put on things like pantyhose/bodystockings/spanx type garments without assistance because regardless of size the whole group wears them. Guard Moms the old saying "practice makes perfect" is true and this spring/summer is the perfect time to encourage growth & independence by teaching your girl and practicing all these skills.

Goals we have for the fall...we would like for all 28 Tigerettes to be able to do the minimum of a pencil turn, heel to toe march, point march, saute, chasse, jazz run, drop spins, extensions, cones, flips, single pirouette, attitude turn, flag = double toss, single horizontal toss, & lofty praise toss...all with solid hands/feet, height, rotation. Our fall weapon line should be working to master all of the above plus the following... splits, double pirouette, illusion, barrel roll, flag = 45 behind the back, one turn, high silk toss, high praise toss, rifle = triples/quads & above with solid hands/feet, height/rotation, saber = blade/hilt double/triples...along with any tricks like one turns, hand stands, cartwheels, etc. Again these are simply goals...the better your individual skills & stronger you are physically the better we are as a group!

APPEARANCE...

No visible piercings other than ears. Belly piercings must be band-aided flat under shirt for every rehearsal and performance. Visible tattoos must be covered with skincolored waterproof bandaids at every rehearsal and performance. These guidelines also apply during each & every school day as well!!

Off Season Hair---all agreed to maintain a shoulder length hairstyle. While we feel sure that some of you may need a good trim as the school year ends, do not think for a second that a chin length hairstyle is okay...no matter your grade level we view this as defiance...hair must be shoulder length or longer when prepared for performance with no bangs...very simply stated, it is not what you agreed to do when you tried out last January so just don’t do it. HAIR COLOR CHANGE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED DURING MARCHING OR WINTER SEASON. Use summer as the time to play with color if you must, but please do not damage your hair. Before we return to camp please have real hairdressers do highlighting/lowlighting/coloring working off your natural hair color...fyi...the real color of your hair is the color growing out of your head at the root.

Off Season Weight---remember that extra pounds weaken your ability to move & perform with ease. Please eat healthy, avoid sodas, drink water, exercise, and stay in shape...any/all uniform/costume alterations are paid for by parents.

RANDOM...

Cell Phones...all girls need one for communication when we get to camp. REMIND must be installed and notifications for that app must be on at all times. If phones scare you or your daughter is not trustworthy please simply find/install parent security apps to monitor/control your daughter's cell habits.

Social Media...in today’s world, social media plays a huge part in our day-to-day lives. In effort to keep our social media profiles showing nothing but our best, here are a few tips to keeping your profile clean, powerful and positive this summer. First, avoid using offensive or derogatory language on social media sites such as SnapChat, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and avoid all fake names/profiles and anonymous posting apps. (make sure your automatic retweets are not set for any accounts that post sensitive items) Lots of people have access to these sites and you want to be sure to present the best YOU possible. Next, keep personal arguments off social media sites and remember to keep your photos respectable. Social media sites are no place for mean words or for photos that suggest anything other than a positive image. Another online behavior to avoid is the "mean teen" trend in social media--posting a location, status, or photo that "appears positive" but in reality is only being put out there to jab at someone or hurt their feelings...a location, post, or pic intended solely to let others know they are NOT included is an example of hurtful, negative behavior that we should all work hard to avoid. Lastly always remember everything you post can be traced back to you. So please, consider all these things & think before you post...the old saying still rings true...if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!! (these social media tips apply to your texting and email as well bc everyone screen shots things these days and sends them straight to us!!)

Last but not least...please make a habit of checking our blog this summer and make sure your REMIND APP is installed with NOTIFICATIONS ON!! If you need to know something you should be able to find it on here or get a text about it. The blog & REMIND have replaced notes home. It is a quicker and more effective way for us to get you the info needed. Tigerettes are held accountable for everything posted in either place so please do not delete your Remind messages.

Please note: the Guard blog may contain different info than for the Band...Tigs always follow GUARD instructions.

Thanks!!! D & R :0)

Please make sure you use the spring/summer weeks to have yourself fully prepared...healthy eating habits, exercise, and lots of stretching will help get/keep you in shape.

In efforts to keep our social media profiles showing nothing but our best, here are a few tips to keeping your profile clean, powerful and positive this summer. First, avoid using offensive or derogatory language on social media sites such as SnapChat, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and avoid all the anonymous posting apps. One last online behavior to avoid is the "mean teen" trend in social media--posting a location, status, or photo that "appears positive" but in reality is only being put out there to jab at someone or hurt their feelings...a location, post, or pic intended solely to let others know they are NOT included is an example of hurtful, negative behavior that we should all work hard to avoid.

Thanks!!! D & R :0)

Philippians 4:8...finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. :0)
